Favorite Finds

This week was a big week in social media. History was made, scandal rocked the food community and brands are flocking in droves towards Instagram video over Vine. Let us present our favorite finds from this week!
  • Last week Paula Deen saw herself in a crisis as a lawsuit filed by a former employee alleged that Dean addressed her using a racial slur. In an attempt to rectify the situation Deen appeared on the Today show on an interview that received mixed reviews. In the aftermath, several of Deen’s partners dropped her as a spokesperson, including The Food Network, Smithfield Foods and Walmart. Will the former Food Network celebrity be able to bounce back?
  • A historic ruling was made this week for gay rights. Social media was waiting on the edge of their seats for the decision to come through via a paper announcement, which poses the question of should the Supreme Court be on social media? PR Daily weights in on the debate.
  • After the announcement of Instagram video, top brands are flocking towards the service over Twitter’s version, Vine.
  • Managing a brand’s social media accounts can sometimes be a challenge, especially when creating content that will engage your audience. Some examples include behind-the-scenes content and shareable content.
  • Now that summer is in full swing, PR pros are switching their wardrobes from warm and fuzzy to cool and comfortable. PR Daily provides some “dos and don’ts” for summer PR work wear. Using the fingertip rule, wearing flip flops with discretion and add colored pants as a way to switch things up.

In the Mix...Women’s Luncheon Celebrates Family Legacies

Generations of Chicago-area Jewish women recently joined together to honor their families’ most cherished treasures at a L’Dor V’Dor Luncheon at the Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership.  Hosted by our client, the Dignity Memorial® network, including Piser Funeral Services and Weinstein Funeral Home, the event was a celebration of family, community and the passing of treasures and stories from one generation to the next.   For the event, LCWA secured speakers like Chicago stylist and author Barri Leiner Grant and Ilana Segal, Spertus Institute curator.  We also encouraged guests to share and record stories of their family treasures via portrait photography and a video “Memory Booth.”

In the Mix…Contigo Campaign Improves the Morning Commute

Alarms around America are sounding this morning for more commuters than ever before – and we’re working with Contigo to arm those commuters with the right gear for the road. In the Mix...Dental Sleep Medicine Professionals Descend on Baltimore

The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) gathered in Baltimore for their 22nd Annual Meeting earlier this month, and LCWA joined them in “Charm City” to help spread the news of this growing area of practice to trade and consumer media. While more than 1,000 dentists and exhibitors gathered to study new sleep medicine research and share best practices, the LCWA team coordinated the meeting's first press attendance, hosted a member seminar on "Promoting Your Local Practice" and presented a year's worth of impressive media placements to the General Assembly. Back in Chicago, we’re now expanding upon the relationships formed with trade media at the show and turning the award-winning research abstracts presented at the meeting into news bytes for health-focused reporters nationwide.

  • Timing is Everything! – We found an interesting infographic that lists, in general, the best and worst times to post to the major social networks.
  • Facebook Adds #Hashtags – Facebook announced this week that it will follow Twitter and Instagram's lead and add clickable #hashtags to organize public conversations.
  •  Mascots Top Celebrities – According to new research, the Pillsbury Doughboy mascot garners more than 10 times the social-media buzz related to its brand, Pillsbury, than celebrity endorser LeBron James does for Nike.
  • B2B Social – Have you ever wondered if B2B companies really need social media? The answer, of course, is a resounding yes!
  • Social Media Success – We found an informative infographic highlighting tips for a successful social media campaign on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

In the Mix…AASM Makes News at Annual Meeting

Last week, I went to Batimore for SLEEP 2013, the foremost gathering of sleep experts annually, which is hosted by our client the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). The meeting serves to highlight new research abstracts and tout advancements in the specialty of sleep medicine. To kick off the show, we announced a new health advisory from the AASM, recommending that Type 2 diabetics and hypertension sufferers be evaluated for sleep apnea. There is a big chance those with one disorder also have the other, and treating sleep apnea can help the symptoms of Type 2 diabetes and hypertension. We are getting the word out to consumer, health and trade media now to encourage action by those who may have obstructive sleep apnea.

Favorite Finds

Happy Friday! This week brings a competitive edge to the world of social media – from challenges posed to existing platforms by new ones entering the game to personal vs. virtual wedding planning. Here are our favorite media stories for the week:
  • Let the Battle Begin – Soon to be a trending hashtag, #GameofCones is a collaboration between HBO and Foursquare that will pit the east coast against the west coast. Between June 7-21, users check-in at select ice cream shops in NYC and San Francisco with the hashtag. The shop with the most check-ins will win the Iron Cone! (What exactly that is remains a mystery.)
  • The Perfect Pinterest PictureWired magazine reports that a research team has determined the six characteristics of a popular Pinterest post. Chef Paula Deen’s “Aunt Peggy’s Cucumber, Tomato and Onion Salad” is the ideal image, having generated the most engagement.
  • LinkedIn May Have Some Competition – The Wall Street Journal is set to launch WSJ Profile, a social networking site that resembles LinkedIn, allowing users to create resume-based profiles.
  • Weddings Go Digital – Are wedding planners and photographers becoming obsolete? NBC News reports that brides are turning to social media for their Big Day.
  • TweetDeck Gets a Major Makeover – Twitter launched the redesigned TweetDeck, creating a more user-friendly menu and an interface that resembles dashboard competitors like HootSuite.

Versatile and convenient home appliances are always wise gifts! This week, LCWA coordinated inclusion for client Electrolux’s Ergorapido Brushroll Clean in an NBC "Today Show" segment on nine gifts to give college graduates. The segment offered unique alternatives to traditional graduation gifts, and the Ergorapido Brushroll Clean was described as “amazing” and touted for its cordless, 2-in-1 design. Who doesn't rely on bloggers for recipes and cooking advice these days? To help support the launch of Frigidaire Professional’s kitchen countertop appliance line at Target this spring, the LCWA team has been busy building partnerships with 10 influential food and home bloggers. Dubbed the Frigidaire Professional “Gift Guild,” these bloggers received several appliances to test, gift to friends or family and give away to readers on their blogs, all to encourage readers to give their loved ones the “gift of time” for graduations and weddings this season. Personal trainers all over the world can be nominated through June 30 for the Personal Trainers to Watch program at www.lifefitness.com/personaltrainers.
